  HOME > Quick NKK guide[STEP2]

NKK was founded in 1941. NKK started the business with making paper-made tea bags for Chinese medicine, etc. The tea bags made of Kochi’s traditional paper named “Tosa Washi” that was hand-made. Tosa Washi had features such as water resistance and heat resistance. NKK made paper that had improved features of Tosa Washi and named it “KODOSHI” that means “Advanced paper”.

The catalyst for making an advancement into electronics field was the development of radar during WW2. The material of separator at the time was cotton. However, the substitute was required due to wartime shortage in deteriorated war situation. Therefore, "KODOSHI" attracted attention.
The "KODOSHI" showed a high performance exceeding the level of substitute and the research was promoted after that. In this way, a new road NKK was offered a new avenue and made an advancement in its earliest days of electronics.

NKK has walked with diffusion, expansion, globalization of continuously produced electronics products, and digitalization of society. In future, the supply of products to environment and energy fields is expected while the world is widely shifting to the realization of low carbon society and the stage of NKK is spreading more and more.

 1. Start-up phase (the 1940s and 1950s)

Developed and sold "Kodoshi (high quality paper)" processed from Tosa Japanese paper. After the World War II, we expanded our business to electronics field. In the 1950s, demand of separators for electrolytic capacitors used in civilian goods increased considerably as electric washers, black and white TV sets and home-use refrigerators began to be sold in the market.

 2. Business establishing phase (the 1960s and 1970s)

We established a manufacturing technique of "Duplex paper" integrating high density and low density paper into a sheet of paper, which was epoch-making and was the first of such achievements in Japan. With electronic products such as color TV sets becoming popular, we gradually consolidated our business base and established our status as a major manufacturer of separator for capacitors.

 3. Business expansion phase (the 1980s and 1990s)

Driven by the demand from domestic manufacturers and with active pursuit of sales in overseas, we became one of global brands. Production capacity was enhanced such as by building Aki new plant. A system to provide a stable supply was established. In the second half of the 1990s, sales in East Asia and ASEAN areas came to consist 40% of our total sales.

 4. Leap-forward, growth phase (the 2000s)

4-1. Acceleration of digital innovation
Market for digital consumer electronics such as flat-screen TV sets and digital cameras expanded globally. We increased our share in the global market by exploring markets in rising countries, for example, by establishing a local subsidiary in Malaysia.
4-2. Progress of energy innovation
As global trend toward the realization of low-carbon society accelerated, we pushed ahead in establishing new business lines of products accommodating energy saving, energy generation, and energy storage. Began selling separators for lithium-ion batteries. Constructed Yonago Plant at Yonago city, Tottori (Operation started in 2012).
